Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-09
This Privacy Policy explains what information DiffQuery (the "Service", available at https://www.diffquery.com) collects when you visit the website, how we use it, and the choices you have. The Service is operated by an independent maintainer and provides browser-based comparison tools for documents, code, text, and images.
1. Files and comparison content
DiffQuery is designed to process the files, text, code, and images you compare directly inside your browser whenever possible. The contents of the documents you upload or paste for comparison are not transmitted to our servers, are not stored on our servers, and are not shared with any third party. Comparison results are generated on the page and discarded when you close or navigate away from the page.
Do not upload or paste any content that you do not have the right to review through this Service. You remain responsible for the lawfulness of the content you choose to compare.
2. Information we collect automatically
When you visit the Service, the following technical information may be collected automatically by us or by the third-party services listed in section 3:
- Browser type and version, operating system, screen size, and device type.
- Referring URL, the pages you view on DiffQuery, and the language preference you set.
- Approximate location derived from your IP address (country / region level), and an anonymized or truncated form of your IP address used for spam and abuse prevention.
- Aggregated usage statistics such as page load time and broad interaction events.
We do not ask for, and the Service does not require, any account, name, postal address, phone number, or payment information.
3. Third-party services
We use the following third-party services. Each third party processes data under its own privacy policy, which you can review at the links below.
Google AdSense (advertising)
The Service displays advertisements served by Google AdSense (Google LLC). Google and its certified third-party vendors may use cookies, device identifiers, and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites, and to measure ad performance. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites on the internet.
Learn more or opt out of personalized advertising: Google's advertising policies, Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info, or youronlinechoices.eu.
Umami (privacy-friendly analytics)
The Service uses Umami to count visits and understand which pages are useful. Umami is configured to collect aggregated, anonymized information only. It does not use third-party cookies, does not assign a persistent identifier across sessions, and does not track you across other websites. See Umami's documentation for details.
Hosting and content delivery
The Service is delivered from standard web hosting infrastructure. The hosting provider may keep short-lived server logs that include the requesting IP address, the requested URL, the response status, and the user-agent string. These logs are used to diagnose errors and to mitigate abuse, and are retained for a limited period.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
The Service may use the following categories of cookies and local storage entries:
- Essential: a small cookie used to remember your preferred language so the right localized version of the page loads on your next visit. This is set by the i18n library used by DiffQuery.
- Analytics: Umami may use a short-lived, first-party identifier so it can avoid double-counting page views inside a single visit.
- Advertising: Google AdSense and its certified vendors may set cookies and read existing cookies to serve and measure advertising. These cookies are set by Google's domains and are governed by Google's policies.
You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking advertising cookies will not prevent ads from appearing on the Service, but the ads you see will be less relevant.
5. Legal bases (EEA / UK / GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with similar laws, we rely on the following legal bases for processing the limited data described above:
- Legitimate interests — to operate, secure, and improve the Service, and to understand aggregated usage.
- Consent — for non-essential cookies, including personalized advertising cookies, where consent is required by your local law. You can withdraw consent at any time using the controls described in section 4 and section 3 above.
- Compliance with legal obligations — to respond to lawful requests from public authorities.
Under GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
6. California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected, to request deletion of personal information we hold about you, and to opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal information as those terms are defined under California law. DiffQuery does not sell personal information for money. To the extent that the use of advertising cookies described above is treated as "sharing" under California law, you can opt out using Google's Ads Settings linked in section 3 and the cookie controls described in section 4.
7. Data retention
File contents you compare are not retained server-side. Aggregated analytics are retained only for as long as necessary to understand longer-term traffic patterns and are not linked to personal identifiers. Server logs are retained for a short, rolling window for security and abuse-mitigation purposes.
8. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to the Service, please contact us using the email below and we will delete that information.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the latest revision took effect. Significant changes will be reflected on this page; continued use of the Service after the change means you accept the updated policy.
10. Contact us
For privacy questions, data subject requests, or any other privacy-related concerns, please use the contact channels listed on our contact page.
Please include enough detail to identify your request without sending any sensitive document content. We aim to respond within a reasonable period under applicable law.
